Remember Farris Hassan? He was the 16-year-old Florida boy who made headlines in 2006 when he traveled to Iraq without even telling his own mother.
He came back to establish The Society of Love and Justice. In his first project they collected and sent school supplies to rebuild the educational system in Iraq via Operation Iraqi Children. In his next project he sent student-written letters to American soldiers in Iraq for Christmas.
We were all a bit suspicious of him as I recall, but it seems he is just one of those rare passionate kids that feels a calling to make the world a better place.
Read his essay about going into Iraq in 2005.
It's quite beautiful.
