Who are you going to believe?

Our soldiers who are risking their lives every day or a New York Times Reporter?

4 Mile Creek:

Not that anyone should believe an Iraqi soldier, especially if what he says contradicts what a NYTs reporter is writing about Iraq from poolside at the Palestine Hotel, but occasionally the Iraqi soldiers talk about what's going on in their country. And occasionally what they say is worth listening to.

"I tell all of those that go through this course (commando - ed) that first and foremost you are Iraqi" Al-Barwarie said. "It doesn't matter how much money you have, where your family comes from, or what your religious background is, you are an Iraqi soldier, and you have to put the country above all else."

Another commando talks as if he actually believes in what he's doing.

"When I was young, I dreamed of becoming Special Forces," said Ali. "I had seen movies of the U.S. Special Forces and wanted to be like them."

And why would Ali want to be like the SOF? To be better at inciting sectarian violence? To be able to participate in the long-predicted but never appearing NYTs civil war? Not really. Seems Ali is just another jingoistic flag-waving patriot at heart, although his flag happens to be red, green and black instead of red, white and blue.

"The Iraqi people are tired of the terrorists, extremeists, and instability, and this unit fights that....I am very proud that I am part of this special unit that will help stabilize this country," he said. "The terrorists have had their time. This is our time now."

Yes it is Ali. I sure hope you get enough time to do the job before the Leftists worldwide join cause with the Islamists in your country, and cut your throat.

4 Mile Creek has more on why the soldiers might know more than the "intellectuals."

And an interesting comment in the thread:

Once you've played with the kids over here, and found out that they are just like your own kids, the nuke option is out the window. That's one of the reasons soldiers are willing to come back here. They know that the islamists need to be killed, and we want to make sure we kill only the islamists, even as they hide among the Iraqis and their children.
